Frequently Asked Questions.

  1. Will the transmitter monitor multiple phone lines in a house or business?
No. The unit is designed to monitor only one phone line that you select to detect the 911 call.

  2. What is an RJ-11 jack?
The most common telephone jack is the RJ-11 jack, which is likely to be the jack that your household or office phones are plugged into from the ordinary untwisted flat wire people are most familiar with.Your computer modem is usually connected to an RJ-11 jack.

  3. Does a telephone set have to be connected to the top of the transmitter for the unit to activate the strobe light?
No. The transmitter will work from any spare RJ-11 phone jack as long as it’s connected to the same phone line that you would use to make a 911 call.

  4. If I need to dial 9 or another number or code to get an outside line, will this device work?
No. The transmitter is programmed to detect only the first three digits, 911 and the test codes #99 & #11.

  5. Will the device work for all home and business phone lines?
No. Guide Light 911™ can only be used with a standard RJ-11 jack.

  6. The strobe light doesn’t flash after dialing the test code #99, what can be wrong?

    a. Make certain that you hear dial tone when you directly connect a phone set into the top of the transmitter.
    b. Make certain that the transmitter wire snaps into the phone jack for a good connection.
    c. Press the reset button on the transmitter (or dial #11) and wait 5 seconds for the unit to reprogram itself.
    d. Check that the batteries are installed in the proper direction (+/-).
    e. Check factory set dip switch positions on the inside of the battery compartments. Eight switch positions for the transmitter and strobe light must be identical. Move the switches only if they do not match.
  7. How long does the strobe light flash?
The unit is programmed to flash for thirty minutes and then automatically shuts off. Redialing 911 or the test code #99 will reactivate the unit.

  8. How often do I replace the batteries?
It is recommended that batteries be replaced at least twice per year, once at daylight savings time and once at standard time. Batteries should be replaced immediately if either the transmitter or strobe light low battery detectors are activated (chirp sound & LED red light).

  9. Should I retest the units after batteries are changed?
Yes. It is possible that the batteries may have been put in backwards.

  10. How do I know that dialing 911 will work without testing an actual 911 call?
Each unit has a programmable chip that has two activation codes, #99 and 911, built into the software. Dialing #99 to activate the unit is sufficient for testing purposes.

  11. What does it mean when I dial #99 and #11 and I get a recording that says: “We’re sorry you are not a subscriber to this service. If you wish to become a subscribe please dial 611”
That message is your phone company asking you if you’d like to subscribe to a service or that no service is available for #99 and #11. It has nothing to do with Guide Light 911 and will not affect the test codes functionality.

  12. Strobe light battery installation problem.

Look at the diagram on the inside of the battery compartment showing the correct installation of the (4) AA batteries. The battery compartment has been designed for a tight fit to insure proper contact with battery terminals.

    Easy installation tip:
Insert batteries on an angle and press down.
